Citizens Frustrated Over Kosovo’s Political Deadlock

Kosovo

The Vetevendosje Movement (LVV) has failed for the fourth time in a row to electAlbulena Haxhiu as Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo, in a session held on April 25. With 118 deputies present in the hall, Haxhiu received 57 votes in favor, 47 against and 3 abstentions, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.

This failure comes despite the official proposal from the vice president of LVV, Glaucus Konjufca, for her candidacy.

Citizens' reactions after the failure of the Assembly session

Political developments in the country have sparked numerous reactions from citizens. Many of them have expressed disappointment with the functioning of institutions and the way in which voters' interests are represented.

Arif Latifi, an interviewed citizen, stated that the people's vote is being misused and that political parties are no longer representative of the citizens' will. According to him, the manipulation by minority MPs for personal interests is severely damaging democracy and the state of Kosovo.

"The people are giving their votes to those who don't deserve it. They are lying to the people. Criminals are representing the citizens because we give them our votes."

On the other hand, Bajram Demaj blames the opposition for blocking the election of the speaker of parliament. According to him, since Vetëvendosje is the winning party in the elections, it has the constitutional right to propose the speaker of the Assembly.

"The opposition is to blame. If political cooperation is not established, then the country must go to elections. We cannot remain without functional institutions."

He also mentioned the possibility of early elections later. 15 June 2025, if the political crisis is not resolved.

Criticism of parties as interest groups

Xhafer Syla, another citizen, assesses that political parties have turned into interest groups who fight only for power and not for the good of the citizens.

"If there is no respect and cooperation between MPs, then elections are the only solution. The same problem exists in Albania and Macedonia."

What is expected next?

The Assembly session will continue on Sunday, April 27 at 10:00, where another attempt to elect the Speaker of the Assembly is expected. The political crisis in Kosovo remains a serious challenge to the functioning of democratic institutions.
