Chaos in Kosovo Parliament: Acting minister resigns after session collapse

Kosovo

Faton Peci from the Guxo List accused the Serb List and other opposition parties of causing the failure of the constitutive parliamentary session. After the session was interrupted, he stated that they already had a candidate's name for the position of Speaker of Parliament.

Peci said that he had offered his resignation today to the acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.

“As the acting Minister, today I submitted my resignation to my superior, the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti. Since the constitution of the Assembly and the verification of mandates (the first item on the agenda) is a legal and constitutional obligation, this process was made impossible due to the abstention of the Serb List and the opposition voting against it. This is a new situation which, from a constitutional and legal perspective, is neither foreseen nor clearly defined,” he stated.

The acting Minister of Agriculture, Faton Peci, said that the Serb List and the opposition prevented the formation of institutions.

“The law states this must happen before the oath is taken. We submitted our resignations to the head of government, Albin Kurti. He in turn submitted them to the outgoing Speaker of the Assembly, Glauk Konjufca, until a new speaker is elected. There is no other mechanism for proceeding differently. What is known is that the Serb List and the opposition blocked the constitutional process and the first step in electing the Speaker,” he said.

The MP from LVV (Vetëvendosje Movement) said that as the winning party of the February 9 elections, they already had a candidate for the role of Speaker of Parliament.

Despite resigning, Faton Peci stated he will continue his work and return to his office for the time being.
