Turkish Man Speaks Danish After Brain Surgery
A 67-year-old man from Turkey began speaking Danish, a language he hadn't used in years, after suffering a brain blood clot and undergoing emergency treatment. Rahmi Karademir, who had lived in Denmark for two decades before returning to Turkey, underwent knee surgery last week in Konya province. Two days later, he lost strength in his right arm and leg and developed speech difficulties, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency
Doctors discovered a blood clot blocking a key vessel in his brain, which they successfully removed. While his physical symptoms improved, Karademir found he could no longer speak Turkish. Instead, he began speaking Danish, startling his family.
Though he understands Turkish, Karademir cannot speak it, and he expressed distress over the loss of his native language. His daughter Meral, who helped translate, noted that the family was shocked to hear him speak Danish again.
Dr. Gokhan Ozdemir, who treated Karademir, explained that this rare occurrence, known as "foreign language syndrome," happens when brain injuries affect language centers differently. Doctors believe Karademir will gradually regain his ability to speak Turkish.
