Pope Francis has died at the age of 88 following a prolonged respiratory illness, the Vatican announced Monday, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency

Born in Buenos Aires on December 17, 1936, to Italian immigrant parents, Francis was ordained a Jesuit priest in 1969 after studying in Argentina and Germany.

As pope, he was known for his efforts to reform the Vatican, fight corruption, and address social justice issues. Though admired for his humility and progressive stance, his leadership faced strong opposition from conservative factions within and outside the Church.
