Sex work gets legal label in Italy

European Union

Sex workers and escorts have got their own ATECO business code from national statistics agency Istat to classify activities linked to sexual services.

The ATECO code is a classification system used to uniquely identify the economic activities of companies and freelancers, CE Report quotes ANSA.

Green-Left Alliance (AVS) House Whip Luana Zanella said: "The Italian right is all about God, country and family but if it has to cash in it even legitimises prostitution".

She said late Socialist Senator Tina Merlin, whose law closed brothels down in 1958, would be "turning in her grave".

Istat stressed that pimping or other exploitation of prostitution was not being given an ATECO.
