EU Enlargement Set to Gain Momentum During Polish Presidency

European Union

The European Union's enlargement process is expected to accelerate during Poland's presidency of the European Council, according to EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency

Speaking before the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Kos expressed optimism about advancing negotiations with Ukraine, Moldova, and Western Balkans candidate states. “With the support of EU member states, we could see the opening of one or two clusters with Ukraine and Moldova, as well as progress on several clusters in the Western Balkans,” she said.

Kos emphasized that sustained reform efforts by candidate countries could lead to more progress during the Polish presidency than in the past decade. She highlighted Moldova’s need for increased EU support in the face of Russian interference and manipulation.

In contrast, Georgia's government was criticized for drifting away from EU integration despite strong pro-EU sentiment among its population.

Kos also urged Albania and Montenegro to expedite necessary legislative actions to advance their accession talks. “EU accession requires a collective effort,” she noted, stressing the importance of national unity and involvement from governments, parliaments, civil society, and citizens.

The Polish presidency, set for the latter half of 2025, is expected to be a pivotal period for the EU's enlargement agenda.
