Romania's Hidroelectrica and the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have signed a memorandum aimed at advancing green energy storage through pumped storage hydropower plants (PSH) in the Carpathian Mountains. This partnership positions Romania as a leader in Europe in energy storage technology, CE Report quotes Agerpres

Romania's Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja shared the news on Monday, following a key bilateral meeting with U.S. Energy Secretary Christopher Allen Wright at the Three Seas Summit in Warsaw. The discussions focused on strategic energy projects, including small modular reactors (SMRs) and the expansion of the Cernavoda nuclear power plant. The U.S. collaboration also includes the HVDC project, aimed at enhancing renewable energy integration.

The new PSH initiative, with American support, will see pre-feasibility and feasibility studies conducted to further develop "green batteries" across Romania's Carpathian Arc. Burduja emphasized the importance of these projects in transforming Romania into a strong regional energy hub.

Other topics of discussion included geothermal energy projects and Romania’s potential for increased natural gas production.
