SMRs Discussed at Sofia Energy Forum
An international conference in Sofia, organized by the Bulgarian Energy and Mining Forum and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Bulgaria, focused on the role of small modular reactors (SMRs) in achieving decarbonization goals. Held under the patronage of Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov, the forum brought together experts and representatives from tech companies, CE Report quotes BTA
The European Commission (EC) supports SMRs, which offer a low-carbon alternative to traditional power plants. The EC's European Industrial Alliance on SMRs, established in February 2024, aims to accelerate the development of nuclear technology to help the EU meet climate targets.
Deputy Energy Minister Georgi Samandov emphasized Bulgaria's expertise in nuclear energy, aiming to advance SMR technology, particularly with the US AP1000 model. He noted that small modular reactors could strengthen Bulgaria’s role in Europe’s energy mix.
Alex Nestor, President of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Bulgaria, highlighted the challenges in nuclear development, citing past project delays and budget overruns. MEP Tsvetelina Penkova reviewed European policies supporting nuclear sustainability and SMRs, which offer flexible, cost-effective solutions, especially in remote areas.
Gianfranco Brunetti of the EC underscored that SMRs will be crucial to meet the EU’s 2050 energy needs. Westinghouse’s Enguerrand Ducene emphasized safety and security, noting that their AP1000 technology is being adapted for the smaller scale of SMRs.
