Romania remains committed to its goal of doubling electricity production and becoming a key energy exporter in the region by 2032, according to Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja. However, achieving this requires an intelligent energy transition that maximizes the country’s resources, he stated on Facebook, CE Report quotes Agerpres

Currently, Romania generates 7,117 MW from a diverse energy mix, including hydrocarbons, coal, nuclear, hydro, wind, solar, biomass, and storage. Recent investments in energy storage are yielding results, with battery storage capacity now surpassing biomass and expected to exceed 1,000 MWh this year, supported by significant EU funding.

Coal remains the second-largest energy source after gas, providing 1,505 MW. Burduja emphasized that coal plants will only be phased out once equivalent continuous power sources replace them. In the coming years, gas-fired power plants will take over, with long-term plans to transition to nuclear energy, including Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). The country is also set to increase its natural gas production through offshore and onshore projects.

Romania’s renewable energy sector continues to expand, with 844 MW of wind and 245 MW of solar capacity, excluding prosumers. With increasing storage capacity, Romania aims to harness more green energy even when natural conditions are unfavorable.

The country has launched its most ambitious energy investment program in 35 years, planning over 10,000 MW of solar and wind, 3,500 MW of gas, 2,200 MW of nuclear, new hydroelectric projects, pumped-storage hydropower plants, and battery storage.

Burduja reiterated that this comprehensive approach will ensure Romania’s energy independence, competitive energy prices, and economic growth, reinforcing its role as a regional energy leader.
