Moldova's Prime Minister Outlines Plans to Avert Energy Crisis
Prime Minister Dorin Recean has detailed multiple scenarios to address a potential energy crisis in Moldova. The government is considering purchasing electricity from Romania or other Western sources via the Isaccea-Vulcanesti power lines and northern Moldova’s infrastructure, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES
Recean also highlighted efforts to boost domestic energy production. Measures include increasing output at the Termoelectrica plant, activating the Costesti hydroelectric station, and integrating green energy from wind and solar sources into the local market.
One proposed strategy involves delivering natural gas to the Kuchurgan power station to generate electricity. Recean expressed confidence that some residents in the Transnistrian region would organize resources to purchase gas for local consumption. He emphasized that no energy or gas would be supplied without payment.
While some power outages might occur due to technical adaptations needed for importing electricity from Romania, Recean assured that these disruptions would last hours, not weeks. He also noted plans for "insular interconnections" with Romania’s energy system at the western border, mitigating risks from potential disruptions in Ukraine.
The government has prepared a winter energy security plan comprising 45 measures, including a voluntary 15% reduction in natural gas consumption and promoting alternative fuels. The plan also addresses scenarios tied to the expiration of the Gazprom transit contract through Ukraine in January 2025.
