Moldovan Prime Minister Announces Resignations and Emergency Measures in Energy Sector

Prime Minister Dorin Recean announced the resignations of key figures in Moldova's energy sector during a press conference today. Energy Minister Victor Parlicov, Energocom Director General Victor Binzari, and Sergiu Tofilat, a government-appointed member of Moldovagaz's Council of Observers, have stepped down. The Prime Minister attributed these resignations to their failure to purchase natural gas last summer when prices were significantly lower, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES

“These individuals either obstructed or failed to act at the right time to secure gas at favorable prices. Instead of ensuring the country’s gas supply, they shifted blame,” Recean stated.

The Prime Minister highlighted immediate actions in the electric energy sector following consultations with industry representatives. "Given the sector’s importance and the emerging challenges, I am personally assuming its management," he emphasized.

Recean also revealed plans to request the parliament to declare a state of emergency in the energy sector starting December 16, 2024. This measure aims to address challenges during the winter season and mitigate risks stemming from geopolitical tensions, including the ongoing war in Ukraine.

“The government is committed to minimizing risks for our citizens, but we must prepare for all scenarios, especially as cold weather has been weaponized against the region for the past three years,” the Prime Minister explained.

Under the proposed state of emergency, Moldova’s Commission for Emergency Situations will have the authority to implement critical measures, such as:

  • Rationalizing energy consumption.
  • Ensuring swift procurement and distribution of natural gas.
  • Establishing expedited payment systems for consumers.
  • Allocating funds to secure necessary energy supplies.
  • Coordinating public information campaigns to inform citizens about the emergency and appropriate responses.

The emergency measures will also address energy supply issues for the Transnistrian region and protect citizens on the right bank of the Dniester River. Recean stressed that the government is taking all possible steps to safeguard the nation through this crisis.
