“The New Year” Sweeps Gopo Awards

At the 19th Gopo Awards Gala held Tuesday evening at the I.L. Caragiale National Theatre in Bucharest, “The New Year That Never Came”, directed by Bogdan Mureșanu, won the top prize for Best Feature Film, along with nine other awards, CE Report quotes Agerpres

Presented by veteran actress Rodica Mandache, who also received a lifetime achievement award, the Best Film trophy crowned a triumphant night for Mureșanu. “I am overwhelmed with immense joy... Nobody makes films thinking they'll end up here,” said the director in his acceptance speech.

The film also claimed awards for Best Direction, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Makeup and Hairstyle, Best Sets, Best Sound, Best Debut Film, Best Editing, and Best Screenplay.

Other lifetime achievement awards were presented to director Dan Pița, actress Ioana Pavelescu, and cinematographer Florin Mihailescu. A special honor went to lighting expert Ion Olteanu.

The Gopo Awards Gala is organized by the Association for the Promotion of Romanian Film, with support from the National Centre of Cinematography and Babel Communications.
