Croatia's Culture Minister Nina Obuljen Koržinek said at a celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Croatian Library for the Blind that expanding access to knowledge and information is crucial for building a society where all citizens are equal and included.

"This is not just an anniversary, but a confirmation of the power of solidarity, the importance of the written word and knowledge, and the unwavering will of all those who strive to ensure that sources of information and knowledge are not a privilege for just some, but a right and accessible to all," said the minister.

She also highlighted that the library has, from the very beginning, acted as a beacon of knowledge, particularly for blind and visually impaired individuals, and all those with difficulties in reading standard print, CE Report quotes HINA.

Expanding access to knowledge, ensuring equal opportunities and participation in social events are key goals that we strive to support financially, said the minister, adding that society can only be strong and successful if every individual feels protected and has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

It is important to raise awareness among our citizens about the specific needs of blind and visually impaired individuals, but also about the fact that they can and should be equal members of our society, she stressed.

The Director of the Croatian Library for the Blind, Karolina Zlatar Radigović, stressed the role of the library in promoting literacy, equality, and access to information for blind and visually impaired people.

"From books in Braille to today’s digital library, we aim to follow technological trends in order to provide our users with better access to knowledge, culture, and information," she said.

The library, as one of the initiators of printing medication labels in Braille, has made a significant contribution to inclusion in the broader social context. Today, it collaborates with numerous school and public libraries, organises lectures, workshops, exhibitions, and actively participates in the work of professional bodies and international organizations.

Gordana Raguž-Vodenac and the "Bat" Reading Club were awarded the "Antun Lastrić" recognition for their contribution to the culture, education, and literacy of blind citizens for the year 2025.

The ceremony also featured the premiere of the documentary film "Feel the Story – 60 Years of the Croatian Library for the Blind," directed by Mario Kovač.

This year also marks the 60th anniversary of the magazine for the blind "Izbor," the 50th anniversary of the magazine "Žena," and the 10th anniversary of the digital library online.
