
Moldova's New UNESCO Secretary-General
Sergiu Musteata has been appointed Secretary-General of Moldova's National Commission for UNESCO (CNRM) during a pivotal time for promoting UNESCO’s values both nationally and internationally. This appointment begins a new era for the Commission, which has operated since September 1993, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES
The Commission, under former Secretary-General Constantin Rusnac, has been key in advancing education, science, culture, and heritage protection in Moldova. Over its 32 years, it has attracted significant resources and forged strong international partnerships for educational and cultural initiatives.
Minister of Culture Sergiu Prodan praised Rusnac for his outstanding leadership, highlighting the Commission's efficiency and professionalism under his guidance. "We express our sincere gratitude to Mr. Rusnac for his dedication to strengthening Moldova's position within UNESCO," said Prodan.
Musteata, an archaeologist and university professor, will focus on continuing ongoing projects and expanding international cooperation, particularly in protecting Moldova’s heritage amid the regional security challenges. The Minister emphasized the heightened importance of heritage protection in light of the war in Ukraine, including efforts to combat illicit trafficking of cultural assets.
Musteata has previously contributed to adding Moldova’s underground wineries to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. The Minister assured full government support for Musteata’s leadership.
