European Research Stations Showcased in Sofia Exhibition
An open-air exhibition on Lovers' Bridge in Sofia is showcasing research stations from across Europe, captured by photographer Evgeni Dimitrov. Organized by eLTER, the exhibition features striking images that highlight the work of advanced scientific sites across 23 countries, CE Report quotes BTA
The photographs, accompanied by descriptive texts, illustrate the research conducted by the Integrated European Long-Term Ecosystem, Critical Zone, and Socio-Ecological Research Infrastructure (eLTER). Over three months, Dimitrov and his team visited cutting-edge research stations, capturing nearly 3,000 photos and 50 videos using drones and cameras. The exhibition offers a visual journey into the complex relationship between humans and nature, emphasizing efforts to promote environmental sustainability.
Dimitrov was particularly interested in showcasing not just the technical aspects of the stations but also their surrounding environments and the people driving scientific progress. "I wanted to capture not only the equipment but also the landscapes, wildlife, and dedicated researchers behind the data," he explained.
Bulgaria plays a key role in eLTER’s network in Southeast Europe. The Bulgarian LTER-BG network, active for over 18 years, includes research sites studying forest, aquatic, and marine ecosystems, such as Belasitsa, the Mesta River, and the Black Sea. A national IT infrastructure is also being developed to support data collection and open-access research.
According to eLTER project coordinators Jaana Back and Dr. Michael Mirtl, the initiative aims to establish a pan-European research infrastructure integrating diverse data sources to better understand interactions between human societies and natural ecosystems.
The exhibition runs throughout the month, offering visitors a unique perspective on the scientific efforts shaping environmental sustainability across Europe.
