Bulgarian Engineer Monitors Antarctic Glaciers with Innovative Technology
Electronics engineer Dr. Petar Sapundzhiev has returned to Antarctica for the seventh consecutive year, developing technological solutions to aid scientific research. Introduced to the expedition by geologist Stefan Velev, Sapundzhiev continues his work on the frozen continent with groundbreaking innovations, CE Report quotes BTA
In 2024, he installed an automatic imaging system on Mirador Hill, overlooking the Huntress Glacier on Livingston Island. This system continuously captures visual data, allowing researchers to analyze glacier movement, melting patterns, and mass fluctuations using advanced algorithms and software. The initiative is part of the Bulgarian Antarctic Base's long-term efforts to understand glaciers' role in local and global climate processes.
"These studies contribute to the global climate puzzle. Everything on our planet is interconnected, and understanding local changes helps us build a broader picture of Earth's processes," Sapundzhiev explained.
Funded by the America for Bulgaria Foundation, his project expands on decades of glacier research. Scientists have previously used GPS tracking, GPR, and satellite imagery to study these icy landscapes. Sapundzhiev’s passion for engineering, nature, and discovery drives his mission to develop innovative tools that unlock the secrets of Antarctica's glaciers.
