"Bulgarian Felted Textiles: A Message from Antiquity" Opens in Sofia
A new exhibition, "Bulgarian Felted Textiles - A Message from Antiquity," is on display at the National Ethnographic Museum (NEM) in Sofia until March 9, 2025. The temporary exhibit showcases some of the most exquisite Bulgarian felted textiles, brought together from the collections of the Plovdiv Regional Ethnographic Museum, the Koprivshtitsa Directorate of Museums, and the National Ethnographic Museum itself, CE Report quotes BTA
The display highlights the ancient wool felting technique, featuring a rich variety of colors, ornaments, and compositions. Natural wool tones like white, brown, and grey, as well as vibrant hues achieved with natural dyes—yellow, red, green, blue, and purple—are prominent. Patterns include geometric, vegetal, animal, and astral symbols, reflecting the artistry of traditional Bulgarian craftsmanship.
The exhibition also includes contemporary examples of felted textiles alongside works from the late 19th to early 20th centuries, with many pieces contributed by the Plovdiv Regional Ethnographic Museum.
A key highlight is a reconstructed Protobulgarian yurt designed by Svetlana Kamps. Adorned with felted decorations featuring ancient motifs such as suns and symbols of home and lineage, the yurt embodies the cultural heritage passed down through generations.
Visitors are invited to explore this timeless craft and its enduring messages in the NEM halls.
