Poverty Rises in Germany
Germany’s poverty rate has risen sharply, with 13 million people—about one in six residents—now living below the poverty line, according to a report by the German Parity Welfare Association. The rate reached 15.5% in 2024, up 1.1 percentage points from the previous year, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency
The report highlights that inflation and rising housing costs have disproportionately impacted vulnerable groups such as single parents, young adults, and retirees—especially elderly women. The median income for those below the poverty line dropped to €921 ($1,049) per month, adjusted for inflation.
Nearly 5 million people struggled to afford basic needs, including heating and clothing. Housing costs were a major burden, with 37% of poor households spending over 40% of their income on rent. A quarter faced severe hardship, with rent and utilities consuming more than half their income, leaving little for essentials like food or healthcare.
The report urges Germany’s new government to prioritize tackling poverty and social exclusion.
