Bulgaria Faces Water Crisis Amid Drought Concerns
A parliamentary hearing was held Thursday to address Bulgaria's looming water crisis, driven by low rainfall and unfavorable drought forecasts for 2025. The session, organized by the Movement for Rights and Freedoms – New Beginning group, featured Environment and Water Minister Manol Genov and Regional Development Minister Ivan Ivanov, CE Report quotes BTA
Genov highlighted concerns over the upcoming warm spring and summer, with reduced water inflow into key reservoirs. As of April 2, 2025, these reservoirs held 55% of their capacity, a decline of 8% from the previous year due to ongoing drought conditions. Despite this, he reassured that Bulgaria’s overall water supply is sufficient, though significant water waste and outdated infrastructure remain issues.
Ivanov pointed out that climate change and aging infrastructure are contributing to worsening water shortages, especially with seasonal consumption spikes and breakdowns in water systems. He emphasized the need for immediate measures, including investment in infrastructure renewal.
Velichie MP Krasimira Katincharova also voiced concerns, urging a halt to water draining from dams for power generation until adequate volumes are restored to meet agricultural needs. She criticized government mismanagement and warned of an impending agricultural crisis, calling for more efficient use of Bulgaria’s limited water resources.
Both ministers and MPs agreed that urgent action is needed to prevent further water scarcity and protect Bulgaria’s agriculture.
