Coca-Cola recalls beverages over high chlorate levels
The European unit responsible for bottling Coca-Cola beverages announced that it has ordered a massive recall of Coke, Sprite, and other drinks after detecting high levels of chlorate, which could pose health risks to consumers, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.
The recall, announced by Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Belgium, according to The Economic Times, affects cans and glass bottles containing high levels of this substance. The affected products include Coke, Sprite, and other beverages distributed in Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, Germany, France, and Luxembourg since November.
The spokesperson for Kosovo’s Food and Veterinary Agency (AUV), Lamir Thaçi, told KosovaPress that, so far, AUV has not received any notification regarding safety concerns for Coca-Cola products sold in Kosovo.
"The Food and Veterinary Agency has not received any notification regarding potential safety concerns for Coca-Cola products sold in Kosovo. We are monitoring the situation through contact mechanisms with food safety authorities and organizations. Any updates will be communicated to consumers. So far, there are no concerns," stated spokesperson Thaçi.
Furthermore, regarding food safety, the Republic of Kosovo receives notifications from the European Union's Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF). In a scientific opinion published in 2015, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) emphasized that long-term exposure to chlorate poses potential health risks for children, particularly those with mild to moderate iodine deficiency.
