Bulgarian Deputy Tourism Minister Irena Georgieva met with Mexican Secretary of Tourism Josefina Rodriguez Zamora during the FITUR 2025 international tourism exhibition in Madrid, according to a press release from Georgieva's Ministry. Discussions focused on expanding cooperation to accommodate the growing number of Mexican tourists visiting Bulgaria, CE Report quotes BTA

Georgieva highlighted a 92% increase in Mexican tourist visits to Bulgaria from January to November 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 8,147. She attributed this growth to the introduction of charter flights between Sofia and Mexico City in May 2024. Popular destinations among Mexican visitors include Sofia, Veliko Tarnovo, and Plovdiv, primarily for cultural and urban tourism.

The Mexican side assured ongoing efforts to address cases of Bulgarian tourists being denied entry to Mexico and promised to inform Bulgaria of specific measures taken.

Additionally, the meeting served as an opportunity for Mexico to present its nomination of Gloria Guevara Manzo for Secretary-General of the UN World Tourism Organization (2026-2029), emphasizing her priorities in sustainability, partnerships, and tourism competitiveness in Europe and Southeast Europe.

Georgieva also met with representatives of Jet2.com & Jet2Holidays to discuss preparations for the upcoming summer season. The company reported a 68% growth in the Bulgarian market over the past two years and projects a further 25% increase in 2025. With new direct flights from Edinburgh to Burgas and a growing number of British tourists expected from May to October, Jet2.com & Jet2Holidays are preparing packages for summer 2026 and planning joint marketing campaigns in the UK.
