CPC Calls for Revocation of Major Bulgarian Mobile Operators' Licenses Over Consumer Rights Violations
The Chair of Bulgaria's Consumer Protection Commission (CPC), Maria Filipova, has formally urged the Communications Regulation Commission (CRC) to revoke the licenses of the country's three major mobile operators, citing repeated consumer rights violations, CE Report quotes BTA
According to the CPC, repeated infractions of the Consumer Protection Act (CPA) by mobile operators have harmed consumers economically and eroded trust in the telecommunications sector. Despite ongoing administrative sanctions and fines, operators have failed to comply with legal obligations, treating penalties as mere operational costs rather than deterrents.
The CPC emphasized that these violations reflect a systemic issue that cannot be resolved through conventional measures. Filipova argues that revoking licenses is a necessary step to restore public trust and ensure lawful market operations.
Consumer complaints about electronic communications services constitute a significant portion of cases handled by the CPC. Over the past five years, mobile operators have faced multiple fines for unfair commercial practices, yet their behavior has remained unchanged.
Filipova also noted that if the CRC determines that mobile operators significantly influence retail pricing, the commission could introduce price controls as needed to protect consumers.
The CPC’s call for stricter sanctions aims to uphold consumer rights and reinforce the rule of law in the telecommunications sector.
