Renewable Energy Reaches Record Share in Moldova's Energy Mix for Winter
On 19 January, renewable energy accounted for 20.59% of Moldova’s electricity production, setting a record for the cold season, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES
“The share of renewable energy in the energy mix surpassed 20%! This is a remarkable milestone, and it’s still winter. As spring arrives, with longer days and stronger seasonal winds, solar and wind energy production will increase even further,” said Constantin Borosan, State Secretary of the Energy Ministry.
The Energy Ministry highlighted that this record underscores the growing potential of renewable energy and the importance of continued investment in the sector.
“With sustained production for domestic consumption, we could double this figure in summer as new capacities come online,” added Carolina Novac, another State Secretary of the Energy Ministry.
The reported statistics exclude output from small self-consumption stations, which operate under net metering mechanisms. By the end of 2024, these stations—primarily in private households and businesses—had a combined capacity of 145 MW. Their actual production on 19 January is expected to be higher, with full data to follow.
According to the National Centre for Sustainable Energy, Moldova’s renewable energy capacity reached nearly 580 MW by late 2024—a threefold increase from 2022 and an eightfold rise from 2020. Renewable sources generated 691,000 MW of electricity in 2024, covering 16.72% of Moldova’s annual consumption. The country aims to raise this share to 30%.
From 1 January 2025, Moldova's right bank of the Dniester River stopped receiving electricity from the Kuchurgan power station after Gazprom ceased gas deliveries. As a result, Moldova now relies on domestic production and imports to meet its energy needs.
