Moldova Launches Program to Offset Rising Electricity Costs for Businesses

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization, Dumitru Alaiba, has announced a new program to help Moldovan companies manage rising electricity costs. The initiative aims to support local producers and enhance competitiveness, particularly in key sectors of the economy, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES

Under the program, the government will compensate up to 50% of the increase in electricity tariffs for eligible businesses over a period of three to six months. Priority will be given to companies producing essential food items such as milk, meat, eggs, and bread. Other sectors in the processing industry, including footwear, clothing, furniture, and electric components, will also benefit.

“This program is direct support for businesses to help them navigate current challenges and strengthen their competitiveness. Essential producers will have priority,” Alaiba stated.

Approximately 10,000 companies are expected to qualify for the compensations. The program is designed to mitigate the impact of external economic pressures, particularly those linked to geopolitical tensions. Alaiba emphasized Moldova's resilience, referencing past energy-related challenges posed by external actors.

The compensation scheme will take effect from the first day of the tariff increase. Detailed regulations will be finalized in the coming days, likely through decisions by the Commission for Emergency Situations (CSE).

Deputy PM Alaiba also encouraged businesses to invest in energy-efficient production processes, modern equipment, and renewable energy solutions to reduce long-term costs.

Last week, Prime Minister Dorin Recean called for additional measures to support both citizens and businesses amid rising energy tariffs.
