Alternative Gas Supply Solutions for Transnistrian Region Explored Amid Gazprom Suspension

The State Secretary of the Energy Ministry, Constantin Borosan, outlined alternative solutions for Tiraspoltransgaz to secure natural gas supplies for the Transnistrian region following Gazprom's suspension of deliveries to Moldovagaz as of January 1, 2025, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES

One option is sourcing gas from the BRM EST Moldova exchange, where Tiraspoltransgaz representatives have already explored trading modalities. Moldovagaz, with significant experience on the platform, shared its expertise. Additionally, gas can be procured from regional exchanges like Bulgaria's Balkan Gas Hub and transported via the Trans-Balkan pipeline in reverse mode. A trial delivery of 240 MWh on December 31 demonstrated the feasibility of this route.

Borosan also emphasized the potential of implementing Energy Package 3 in the region. This would involve unbundling supply from transmission and distribution activities, enabling the purchase of natural gas from global markets, including liquefied natural gas (LNG), as Energocom has successfully done from the United States.

The Gazprom suspension has caused widespread disruptions in the Transnistrian region, cutting off natural gas, heating, and hot water to households, public institutions, and critical facilities. Over 130 schools, 147 kindergartens, and various administrative buildings are without heating, with reserves expected to last only until mid-January in some areas.

Authorities continue to seek sustainable solutions to ensure energy security for the affected regions.
