Bulgaria Advances Energy Infrastructure with Two New European Corridors
The CEO of Bulgaria's Electricity System Operator (ESO), Angelin Tsachev, emphasized the importance of infrastructure development to attract investment and enhance the country's energy capabilities. Speaking at the Powers Summit in Sofia Tech Park, Tsachev outlined plans for two major European energy corridors aimed at optimizing renewable energy usage, CE Report quotes BTA
The first corridor, running East-West, will connect Turkiye, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, and Italy. Tsachev highlighted the potential of leveraging the two-hour time difference between Turkiye and Italy to boost renewable energy supply during peak demand.
The second corridor, running North-South, will link Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Czechia, Poland, and Germany. The project aims to maximize renewable energy consumption and harness the full potential of Southeastern Europe.
Over the past six years, ESO has made significant investments in the electricity transmission system, increasing interconnection capacity to match average daily consumption. This development allows Bulgarian energy producers greater access to European markets, Tsachev noted.
Martin Georgiev, Executive Director of the National Electricity Company, added that Bulgaria is advancing projects for the Batak and Dospat pumped storage hydropower plants. These projects, aligned with European trends, are expected to strengthen the power system and support decarbonization efforts.
