Burgas Port Expansion Unveiled
Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov on Wednesday announced the completion of the REBIRTH28 project, calling it the largest port infrastructure investment in Bulgaria since 2004. Speaking at a ceremony at the Burgas West Terminal, he highlighted the construction of a new deep-water berth (Berth 28) as a milestone in the port’s development, CE Report quotes BTA
The project, funded through a mix of public and private investment, includes a dedicated area for container handling and storage, low-emission cargo transport solutions, and upgraded rail infrastructure to boost connectivity.
“This private investment creates public infrastructure that remains state-owned,” Zhelyazkov said, praising the initiative for enhancing Bulgaria’s competitiveness in maritime transport and supporting multimodal logistics.
The €40 million EU grant under the Connecting Europe Facility was matched by private funding, with an additional €25 million earmarked for logistics operations. Zhelyazkov emphasized that this model aligns with the goals of the European Green Deal by reducing logistics time through innovation, rather than overregulation.
“This is a convergence of policies and a true success for public-private partnership,” he added. “Burgas is now positioned as a key container hub on the Black Sea, ready to handle even the largest ships passing through the Bosphorus.”
