No-Confidence Vote Against Zhelyazkov Fails
The Bulgarian government, led by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, survived a no-confidence vote on Thursday regarding its foreign policy. The motion, presented by the Vazrazhdane party with backing from Velichie and MECh MPs, was rejected with 54 votes in favor and 150 against, CE Report quotes BTA
This was the first no-confidence motion against Zhelyazkov’s Cabinet since its formation in January 2025. To pass, the motion required the support of over half of the 240-seat legislature.
Prime Minister Zhelyazkov thanked those who backed his government, emphasizing Bulgaria’s commitment to European values and democratic progress. Meanwhile, opposition leader Kostadin Kostadinov criticized the government, claiming it serves foreign interests and poses a national security threat.
Other political figures, including Delyan Peevski and Stanislav Balabanov, dismissed the vote as unproductive, while Ivelin Mihaylov from Velichie suggested that a different approach would have garnered more support.
Vice President Iliana Iotova noted that the government's support had grown since its election, with at least 25 additional votes secured.
