The EU must reform its governance structure and decision-making mechanisms to act swiftly and allocate resources to its strategic priorities, Bulgarian President Rumen Radev stated at the Sofia Economic Forum on Monday, CE Report quotes BTA
Radev described 2025 as a pivotal year for Bulgaria, Europe, and the world, highlighting accelerating geopolitical changes, economic challenges, and technological advancements. He pointed to Europe’s leadership crisis, emphasizing the need for strategic competence and honesty with citizens and partners.
Radev called for addressing the root causes of Europe’s struggles, including its innovation lag, energy crisis, and security vulnerabilities. While welcoming the European Commission’s focus on research, innovation, and strategic autonomy, he stressed the need for Europe to take responsibility for its security and economic competitiveness.
He criticized the imbalance in NATO's defense production and called for smaller member states to have equal participation in defense technology development to prevent widening divides. Radev also urged a balanced approach between public and private investment, consolidated capital markets, and reevaluation of pro-liberal policies amid rising global protectionism.
Bulgaria and Romania's accession to the Schengen Area would boost regional economic growth, Radev said. He also underscored Bulgaria’s contributions to industrial development and the importance of improving regional connectivity, including the Pan-European Corridor 8 and stronger transport links with Romania.
The forum brought together experts to discuss energy security, cooperation, and pathways to enhancing Bulgaria’s competitiveness.
