Election of Bulgaria's Prosecutor General Postponed Amid Legal Changes
The Supreme Judicial Council's Plenum postponed the election of a new Prosecutor General during its Thursday meeting. The proposal, presented by Prosecutors Chamber member Georgi Kuzmanov, cited recent amendments to the Judiciary Act passed by the National Assembly on Wednesday, CE Report quotes BTA
The sole candidate for the position, acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov, did not attend the session. According to the transitional provisions of the Judiciary Act amendments, the ongoing election process will be terminated if the law is enacted by presidential decree before its conclusion.
Council members decided to wait for the promulgation of the legal changes before making a final ruling on the procedure. Boyan Magdalinchev, a representative of the Supreme Judicial Council, criticized the amendments, calling them unconstitutional and accusing Parliament of overstepping its authority.
Magdalinchev stated, "It is more prudent to delay the election until the law takes effect," reflecting the council's cautious approach in light of the pending legal adjustments.
