President Radev Urges Responsibility Amid Bulgaria’s Political Crisis

Bulgaria

President Rumen Radev called on political parties to prioritize the nation's stability over partisan interests as Bulgaria faces challenges in forming a government. Speaking on Monday after attending the Epiphany ritual in Sofia, Radev stressed that negotiators must act in the interest of all Bulgarians, not just their voters, CE Report quotes BTA

“I urge political parties to stop playing with the fate of the people and the country's future,” Radev said, adding that prolonging the deadlock or triggering another round of early elections would demonstrate irresponsibility.

The GERB-UDF coalition recently ended talks with Democratic Bulgaria (DB) after failing to agree on cabinet appointments. Negotiations with other parties, including BSP-United Left and There Is Such a People, have also faced obstacles. DB criticized GERB-UDF’s decision, stating they learned of it through the media.

Radev highlighted the urgency of addressing Bulgaria's mounting challenges, including the understaffing and low morale in the armed forces. He urged the government and National Assembly to prioritize salary increases and implement broader measures to enhance service members' motivation and combat readiness.

Reflecting on the broader political climate, Radev expressed concern about growing uncertainty and the inability of the political class to resolve key issues. Commenting on the upcoming election of a new prosecutor general, he criticized the Supreme Judicial Council, citing expired mandates and political dependencies that undermine public trust in the judiciary.

The President concluded his remarks by wishing health and success to Bulgaria’s armed forces and reaffirming the need for decisive leadership in addressing the nation’s challenges.
