Four Dead and Two Injured in Sofia Train Car Fire: Investigation Underway

Bulgaria

A fire in a parked train car at Sofia Central Railway Station early Tuesday claimed four lives and left two others seriously injured, Sofia police confirmed. The injured were hospitalized for treatment after inhaling toxic fumes, CE Report quotes BTA

The Interior Ministry reported that the blaze, which occurred around 2:30 a.m., involved homeless individuals who had entered the train car. Emergency services quickly extinguished the fire. Initially, two fatalities were reported, but the death toll rose as investigations progressed.

Authorities have arrested two individuals in connection with the incident. According to Deputy Sofia City Prosecutor Ivo Iliev, the fire likely started after a confrontation between two people, with one allegedly setting the car ablaze.

The detainees, described as vagrants with prior convictions, are under investigation. One faces potential arson charges, while the other may serve as a witness. DNA testing and autopsies are underway to identify the victims.

Prosecutors are exploring multiple scenarios, including deliberate arson and accidental fire. Further details are expected as the investigation continues.
