GERB-UDF Deputy Chair Expresses Doubts Over Budget and Government Formation in Bulgaria
Rumen Hristov, Deputy Chair of GERB-UDF, has voiced skepticism about the National Assembly's ability to adopt next year’s State Budget before the end of 2024. Speaking on Bulgarian National Television on Monday, Hristov attributed the delay to a "pre-election atmosphere" and rising populist sentiments, CE Report quotes BTA
"I am very worried about the adoption of such a Budget because populist sentiments will be very strong," Hristov said, calling for a more restrictive fiscal plan to demonstrate clear intentions to Brussels.
Regarding government formation, Hristov expressed doubt about success, despite GERB-UDF’s status as the leading political force. He mentioned ongoing talks with potential coalition partners, including Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB), There Is Such a People, and the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP). However, he criticized CC-DB for creating obstacles and imposing conditions, dampening optimism about forming a government.
When asked about Boyko Borissov's potential nomination for prime minister, Hristov affirmed the party’s preference but indicated a willingness to consider alternative options during negotiations. He emphasized the need for a cabinet dominated by GERB-UDF and supported by responsible political figures.
Hristov also highlighted GERB-UDF's constitutional changes aimed at curbing President Rumen Radev's influence during caretaker governments, while defending the decision not to support Nataliya Kiselova as the BSP nominee for Parliament chair, citing long-held ideological differences.
