Albania to cut electricity costs for some households

Albania

All households consuming up to 700 kWh will pay 1 lek less per kilowatt until December 31, 2025.

The decision, approved by the Energy Regulatory Authority Board, will take effect starting February 1, 2025.

The price reduction will apply exclusively to residential consumers, excluding other categories such as businesses, budgetary and non-budgetary institutions. Bread bakeries will also be exempt from the reduction. According to the decision, consumption above 700 kWh will continue to be charged at 9.5 lek per kilowatt, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.

Currently, the price of electricity for residential subscribers is 9.5 lek per kilowatt without VAT, reaching 11.4 lek with VAT.

"It took years, but we managed to say directly to the people, 'Those consuming up to 700 kWh will benefit from a reduction in electricity prices.' Back in 2019, the highest consumption of the year was 21 million kilowatts. On New Year’s Eve of that year, consumption peaked. Today, 22 million kWh is the norm. The peak is no longer during New Year’s, but during the summer and the December-January period.

Albania is a different country now, as the increase in energy consumption reflects economic growth and increased capacities across all sectors for energy use. This is a fact that enables us to take this step toward lowering prices, thanks to higher consumption and revenue,” said Rama on January 8.
