Prime Minister Edi Rama has instructed the parent company of the Chinese social network to not seek urgent clarifications regarding the decision to shut down the platform, stating that this is a decision made by Albania, not the owners of TikTok’s algorithm.

Rama's response on X came after TikTok requested urgent clarifications from the Albanian government regarding the platform's ban for at least one year, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.

"The ban of TikTok for (at least) one year in Albania is not a hasty reaction to just one event, but a decision widely consulted with parent communities in schools across Albania. TikTok has no clarifications to ask from Albania, because in Albania, Albanians decide, not the owners of TikTok’s algorithm," wrote Rama.

While Albania is too small to ask TikTok to protect children and youth from the dangerous depths of its algorithm, Prime Minister Rama hopes that TikTok will do so for the good of all humanity, including Albania.

“To say that the death of a teenage student has no connection to TikTok, because the conflict wasn't generated by TikTok, means not understanding either the seriousness of the threat that platform poses to the children and youth of today, or the reasoning behind our decision to take responsibility for responding to that threat,” added Rama.

He reminded that over 90% of parents have requested the ban of TikTok in Albania.

"And when the overwhelming majority believes that the health of our children should not serve the platform, but the platform should serve the health of our children, then our decision could not be clearer: Either TikTok itself must protect the children of Albania, or Albania will protect its children from TikTok," concluded Rama.
