Election day set in Albania

Albania

The President of Albania, Bajram Begaj, issued a decree today setting the date for the parliamentary elections as May 11, 2025, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.

For these elections, the president had the option to choose one of four Sundays between April 15 and May 15, 2025, as stated by the Office of the President.

The primary reason for selecting May 11, 2025, is the need expressed by the Central Election Commission (CEC) to utilize all available time to prepare the legal and organizational infrastructure, ensuring a successful and effective voting process, including participation from Albanians living abroad.

All political forces have publicly declared their determination to support this process and to prioritize the scheduling of the elections in line with this essential interest. The President of the Republic fully aligns with and respects this will, the Presidency emphasized.

The Democratic Party and a significant portion of parliamentary parties had raised concerns with President Begaj, noting that the scheduling of the 6th Summit of the European Political Community on May 8 and 9, 2025—just two days before the latest possible election date—could provide an unfair advantage to the government and significantly undermine the principle of equal conditions required by the Electoral Code for the election campaign.

In response, President Begaj conducted all necessary verifications with Albania’s competent authorities and officially received assurances that the above-mentioned summit would take place after the parliamentary elections. This was also confirmed to the president by international interlocutors, the statement said.
